A new Google PageRank update?

It seems today (April 6) that Google has done another PageRank update across the board. Naturally I went over to Matt Cutt's blog to see if there was a post about anything but left with an April Fools joke that he is moving to Yahoo. The next stop for me is naturally SitePoint and it seems it's true. Google has updated their pagerank.

The changes

This site has only been up a few months and I have gone from PR0 to a PR6, which is fantastic. This also seems to be the case with a few other SitePoint users. What seems strange though, is Google seems to be giving blogs and real content based and organically linked websites higher priority now more than ever. I mean a PR6 is quite a high PR especially for a new site so I don't see why it would be any other way. Previously, to get such a PageRank you would have to be linked by multiple PR7's (I think I have one PR6 link and a lot of lower ones).

What will the "Internet Marketing" industry do?

This really is going to be quite a shock for a lot of "internet marketers" who have built their websites up with link farms and link exchanges because it just goes to show these really aren't going to make a dent in the future for rankings. They've been saying this for a long time now but I think with this last Google update it's really proved itself.

On the other hand…

Some are saying it's either a hoax or pagerank is bouncing around. This blog doesn't have a load of traffic at all which leads me to consider these points.

Nonetheless, I am happy :)

UPDATE: A few others are actually posting their experiences on the latest post on Matt's blog. One even said his rank went from 0 to 8 unexpectedly with 6 backlinks. Strange.

I would like to comment on above article related to April - 2006 PR update. This page rank update is totally blind update. Huge number of new websites, register a month ago got page rank more than 4 & 5. And that is why the importance of PR has decreased. Though many site got good PR but the traffic to website remain as it was. So increase in PR is not at all beneficial when we are talking about traffic.

Yes this is exactly what I noticed Manish. Where did you read this from or how have you come to this conclusion - just out of interest’s sake.

I opened my new page a few days too late, to get involved into the last pr update. However, I guess the pr is meaningless as long as if you don’t wanna value how much your page is worth. Then the pr becomes an important argument. Top SE ranks on main keywords are much harder to reach. And I believe google is ranking blogs much better during the last month. A few days ago I was looking for a high quality w3d-tutorial with lots of browser comparisons and couldn’t found anymore. :(
Nonetheless , congrats on pr6 and see you at techEblog.

Well generally I can get good ranks on most of the keywords I want to. I run a Web Development business and usually we can get most of the keywords we want to up there.

For me simply having an ok ranked website and a good strategy to place keywords & links somewhere on that site is enough. For more intensive keywords however I believe you require a multiple site strategy. PR6 should help me in the future and I think I will be taking this blog a lot more seriously. Blogs are being favoured more and more but to be honest I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing.

:) Surely, now you can link from http://blaze.wordpress.com/
to your own sides and go for the “multiple site strategy”.
I will open a blog, too :) , see you then.

Anyway..how often does goople update PR. When waz the last time?

  10. blaze on May 17, 2006

You just read about it ;)

And roughly about every 3 months or so.

Search google for “future pagerank” tools, I think there’s one at iwebtools.com and put your site in there, sometimes it’s an accurate prediction.

There’s a chart at xseo tracing the history of various types of G updates. But after the recent Big Daddy roll-out and the fluctuating results that have followed I’m not sure whether past history is a good predictor.

    HI Blaze

I have been coming across many discussion boards and blogs to know more about SEO & google PR. Even i too surprised sometimes where people mentiond that they got PR 6 in only one month. I think they may be using few black hat technics to do that. i dont know much about them but i heard about few concepts like Blogging pinging , tag & ping etc etc..

BTW, it’s worth noting that page rank doesn’t mean that much anymore. Check out the PRs on any search result page.

If your site is in the sandbox does your site still get it’s PR & backlinks updated along w/ non sandbox sites? Or do you have to wait until you are free from the sandbox?

Thanks for the info. I was pretty confused as to why I was not seeing any updates on any of my sites when others (in many webmaster forums) were able to see some changes.

Commenting to the update regarding Matt Cutt’s blog I dont think backlink has played here any significant role for good PR, his blogs is getting regularly fresh content and millions of views throughout world, possibly that might be reason that has raised its PR from 0 to 8, though it’s not a linkbaiting case.

I just started up a site and I’m waiting on my page rank. They do seem to take a long time in between updates!
